The Resurgence of the Static Website
Get Real, Go Simple
Over the years, I’ve found that most small business websites are ‘brochure sites’. They are the ‘web’ equivilent of a brochure that you might give to a customer. It’s the type of site that does not require regular updates by a large team of contributors. In fact, almost all of my clients want me to update their sites while they get on with business as usual. This ’low-change’ site is where static websites really excel.
At Planetblu, we are helping small business move to static websites to increase security, provide a fast responsive site while lowering ongoing costs. We are tending to migrate away from the ‘over-weight’ one size fits all approach. WordPress and other Content Management Systems like it are great for some projects - but for many small businesses, a CMS is overkill, overly complex and come with greater, ongoing and increasing security concerns.
Back to the Future
Back in the day, websites used to be all static pages. Now there is a resurgence of static web pages and it is driven by their simplicity, speed, and security. Unlike dynamic web pages, static pages are pre-rendered, resulting in faster load times and improved performance. They require fewer server resources, making them cost-effective and scalable. Static sites also offer enhanced security, as they have fewer vulnerabilities compared to dynamic sites that rely heavily on server-side processing as with Content Management Systems like WordPress, Joomla and so on.
This resurgence is further fueled by the growing demand for Jamstack architecture, which separates the frontend from backend services, enhancing flexibility and efficiency. Using this approach, static sites can leverage alternate methods of using dynamic data without complex hosting. By harnessing the power of Client Side Scripting, API’s for dynamic data needs and Static Pages for secure content delivery, the Jamstack methodology has a lot of benefits.
